Common Car Problems by Make and Model
Common Hyundai Problems
At Quickfix Mobile Mechanics, we regularly work on Hyundai vehicles across the Gold Coast. Hyundai vehicles are popular and generally good cars, but there are a few common problems we see often, especially with air conditioning systems and petrol engines from around 2012 onwards.
Hyundai Air Conditioning Compressor Problems
One of the most common Hyundai faults we come across is air conditioning compressor failure. When the AC compressor is no longer able to properly pressurise and circulate refrigerant gas, the system may stop blowing cold air or only cool intermittently.
Many Hyundai owners think the vehicle only needs an air conditioning regas, but if the compressor is not pressurising correctly, a regas alone will not fix the issue. Proper diagnosis is required before replacing parts.
- Air conditioning blowing warm air
- Intermittent cooling
- Noisy AC compressor
- AC system operating but not cooling properly
- High-pressure AC line leaks
- Refrigerant gas leaks
Depending on the Hyundai model and parts required, AC compressor replacement can generally range from $1,000 to $1,600 including compressor replacement, regas and system testing. Pricing can vary depending on the vehicle and repair required.
Hyundai Petrol Engine Bearing Failure
Another serious issue we see with some Hyundai petrol engines from around 2012 onwards is engine bearing failure. In many cases, these engines can develop bottom-end knocking noises, low oil pressure symptoms or catastrophic engine failure caused by a spun bearing.
Although Hyundai service intervals may recommend servicing every 15,000 km, we personally believe this interval is too long for many vehicles, especially cars driven in stop-start traffic, hot conditions or short-trip driving. Once oil breaks down or contamination builds up, internal engine components can suffer accelerated wear.
For Hyundai petrol engines, we recommend servicing every 5,000 to 8,000 km using the correct oil specification and quality oil filter. More frequent servicing can help reduce sludge build-up, maintain oil pressure and give the engine the best chance of long-term reliability.
- Rattling or knocking noise from the engine
- Low oil pressure warning light
- Metallic noise on startup
- Engine running rough
- Oil sludge build-up
- Sudden engine failure
If a Hyundai engine has already developed a knocking noise or spun a bearing, servicing will not repair the damage. At that point, the vehicle may require major engine repairs or engine replacement. Early servicing and regular oil changes are the best prevention.
